Mandy

I stared out into the night, letting the hot water bake me as the steam rose from the surface of the liquid. I blinked a few times. Where was I? Why was I in a hot tub?

Warrick sat across from me, also staring into the distance. He was wearing his clothing. In the hot tub. Weird.

Glancing down, I saw I was also wearing my clothing.

What the hell?

I started to overheat. The discomfort brought about panic, and I struggled out of the water and flopped on the ground like a drowned fish. Where I immediately regretted my life choice. I hadn’t noticed the snow until I was planted face first in it. My body wasn’t responding right and though I managed to get to my feet, I stood there, swaying. I’d been wearing my shoes, too. Everything was soaked, and the air was frigid and sucked the breath from my lungs.

Shivering violently and hyperventilating, I tried to get my bearings. Santa Fe certainly got cold in the winter, and we even saw snow now and again, but nothing like this. The white blanket reflected the moon as far as I could see.

Where the hell was I?

Before I could freeze, warm arms wrapped around me.

“Mandy?” Warrick sounded as confused as I felt.

“We have to get warm,” I stammered.

The incubus dragged me back into the hot tub.

A quiet lassitude tried to intrude upon my mind. I pushed it away, too freaked out to give in to the feeling.

“Is this hot tub literally in the middle of nowhere?”

Warrick twisted me by the shoulders until I could see behind us. Why hadn’t I thought to look behind us?

A long, low building that looked like a horror movie hotel stretched behind us. Beyond was a parking lot full of semi-trucks and trailers and a gas station obviously built to accommodate the large vehicles.

“A truck stop?” My brain was starting to work a little faster, and the questions kept piling up. None of this made sense.

Warrick shuddered. “There is a very large blank in my memory. The last thing I recall, we were hiking in the desert.”

“This is certainly not the desert.”

Warrick nodded grimly.

I started to overheat again. “We need to get inside and out of these clothes.”

The incubus felt in his pockets under the water. “I have a room key.” He pulled out an old-fashioned key with a number on it.

“That’s so weird. Fuck, I hope there aren’t bedbugs.” Probably the least of my worries right now.

He shuddered but held out a hand and assisted me out of the hot tub. Then we sprinted to the hotel. Fortunately, we were on the first floor, and it didn’t take long to find our room. Or at least the room we had a key to. My hair was already freezing, and my clothing was stiff with cold by the time Warrick shoved the door open and dragged me inside.

It was warm in the room, and I stood there, shivering. Once my eyeballs were defrosted, I glanced around. It was a standard two bed, with a bathroom off to the side.
